Newsletter #37 Will you be making these common goal setting mistakes next year?

Hi everyone, It’s that cliched ol’ time of year when we start to wind down, reflect on how the year went, and plan to do everything better next year.

But before you rush into a wild new year’s resolution frenzy – remember that less is definitely more when it comes to goal setting.

Here’s a few goal-setting mistakes you might be making as a freelancer:

  • Listing out a ton of business goals, and aiming to achieve way too much. This leads to overwhelm, and reduces the chance of reaching some, or any of your goals.
  • There’s no tracking or measuring the success of your goals. This can get in the way of your momentum, and cause you to lose focus.
  • You’ve got BIG freelancing dreams, but you don’t know where to start, or how to create a step-by-step plan to get there.
  • You follow the crowd and copy what you see everyone else doing, instead of following your own north star and forging a natural path to success.
  • You think too small, and too safe – when you should be dreaming BIGGER! Why not a 3-day work week? Why not double your income instead of trying to find just one more client? Why not aim to totally own a small, specific niche next year?

Focus on a few small things you REALLY want to achieve in 2024 — and go get them. “What we really need is not bigger goals, but better focus. You need to choose one thing and ruthlessly eliminate everything else.” – James Clear, Atomic Habits

You’ll also get access to a brand new video training. It’s a Q&A with the delightful Erin Pennings about how she structures and sells subscription services and VIP day rates to clients. We chatted about:

  • Whether VIP days and subscriptions will work for everyone
  • How to price your productized services
  • How “complete” your work needs to be at the end of a VIP project
  • What you should and shouldn’t offer as part of VIP days and subscriptions
  • How subscriptions differ from retainers
  • How many clients you can offer subscriptions to at once
  • The lifestyle advantages of selling subscription services to clients
  • And more!

In next week’s newsletter, I’ll be sharing my annual Year In Review post – which will give you a super transparent look at how 2023 went for my business and side income projects. If you want a recap – here’s my 2022 review post.

If you’re not writing up an annual review for yourself each year, I totally recommend that you start now. It’s an awesome way to look back at how far you’ve come in your business, and I wish I’d started doing these earlier on. Plus, it’s content you can post on social that’s almost guaranteed to get engagement – because we’re all super nosey about other people’s businesses!

🎄 Stay festive! 🎄

  • This epic post by Jimmy Daly at Superpath reflects on the dumpster fire that has been 2023 (especially for content marketers) and how this has changed the direction and focus of the Superpath brand. It’s a pretty good summary of the year in general – so if you’ve had a rough time, you’ll definitely relate!
