Newsletter #24 Copywriter has groundbreaking revelation after seeing giant Pikachu

Hey everyone,

Want an example of terrible nomadic planning?

I arrived here in Valencia on the day of the highest temperature ever recorded for the city.

Just to add a little spice to my climate anxiety.

I also forgot to check whether my Airbnb had aircon before I booked.

It did not.

Annnnnd I’m here for a month.

Cue sad trumpet sound

Existing in 46C temperatures means the only work I got done for a few days was making sad pterodactyl noises from the sofa and taking eleventy million cold showers.

But even worse than my first world problems is the fact that many locals don’t have a choice but to keep working outside here during this insane heatwave.

Road maintenance crews, street tour guides, the homeless, buskers, and especially the people working in the giant mascot suits in the main square.

Being an 8-foot Pikachu in this weather is no joke.

I passed all of these people as I feebly sweated my way from the train station under my 15kg backpack, clutching my water bottle for dear life.

And I found myself thinking — I LOVE MY WORK AND MY CAREER AND I AM SO FREAKING LUCKY AND I WILL NEVER COMPLAIN ABOUT FREELANCING AGAIN EVER EVER.

Sometimes the universe manages to shake you out of a rut in really unexpected ways.

So instead of running away to become a pale and delicate ornamental hermit (my emergency career backup plan), I’ve drawn up a personal roadmap to:

  • Narrow down my client work focus even more than it is now, so I can ensure what I’m doing is giving me purpose and joy vs just bringing in some cash. Bad clients are worse than no clients.
  • Do more 1:1 coaching calls and workshops to help newer freelancers find better work, hone their sales skills, and develop better business systems. Turns out that helping other writers has way more impact and meaning for me than helping software companies rank in Google search. Who knew!
  • Get more coaching for myself. This is by far the best investment I’ve ever made for my mindset and my business. No matter what stage of freelancing you’re at, you absolutely need to talk to someone who isn’t the voice inside your own head. This means actively participating in your own growth, investigating new ways of working, and generally ensmartening (is that a word?) yourself so you can improve your life/work balance.

So yep. Basically I need to reconnect and refocus on “what brings me joy”.

Which is a thing that sounds really simple, but isn’t in practice.

Your challenge this week is to write down 3 things in your business that bring you joy – and 3 things you absolutely loathe.

Then think about how can you double down on the things you love, and ditch the other stuff.

Feel free to email me and let me know what you come up with!

See you next Monday

Rachael
